‘A good day’ is inspired by place – my childhood holiday cottage, and memory. The shape of memory, how often it repeats in the pattern of our lives, what scale that shape is within the collection of patterns in a day, how often it occurs, how it is sometimes tangible, brilliant and yet other times gossamer, disappearing. These are elements of my current line of enquiry in painting.
‘A good day’ came about through noticing how holding old objects in my hands allowed me to access forgotten memories. Those memories became part of my present again, influencing my current life.
The phrase ‘forgotten memories’ has become a catalyst for a series of paintings, all inspired by old books left in the cottage. How can a memory be forgotten? What will bring it back into accessible memory? Why do we store things that no one will use?  How can we record memories so they won’t be forgotten? These questions are explored in ‘A good day’.
