Trompe L’inoleum

It’s been difficult to capture the true subtly in Trompe L’inoleum, especially the colours. What shoes as a pinky brown here is actually not quite so pink. Otherwise you can see the browns, greys, blacks and creams of the layers of this strong and yet somehow gentle painting. Trompe L’inoleum is my little joke on the colours in 1980s floor coverings. I love those colours and here they are in all their glory.

Trompe L’inoleum certainly has a presence. All the time I was working on it I felt compelled to keep experimenting. Layering thin glazes and washes over a collaged base has led to a painting that has great depth and interest in its subtle textures as well as its greyscale like banding. The name came about because of the colours and textures reminding me of 1980s lino flooring and the sheen they gave off. These subdued colours and textures both hide and reveal what lies beneath.
