Upbringing II is part of a series of layered and textured paintings that reference family relationships. Each person in a family brings their own world with them when they come together. Taste, preferences, pastimes and interests all collide, sometimes gelling with other family members, sometimes seeming downright strange.
My studio is in what was formerly a storeroom and electronics workshop in my parents’ retirement home. To turn the space into a studio required a lot of sorting and letting go of stuff. Some were too precious, in a creative sense, to let go. My father’s electronic notebooks and publications, my mother’s diary notes, lists and religious pamphlets, and many old books on unusual topics such as how to improve your eyesight without glasses.
Pages from these have been layered into these paintings, creating an enticing ‘read’ when you look at this closely. Paint and drawing material has been loosely added to contrast these and to draw it all together, making a wonderful abstract painting when viewed from a distance.
